I painted “Mother and Child” after my daughter, Jamila was born. I was always up at the crack of dawn nursing and I came to love the pink sky and the time with my daughter it came to represent. The foliage wrapping around the edge is from my neighborhood in Montclair. I took snapshots in the car and on walks in the nearby Redwood Regional Park and used these as references for the painting. The deer, trees in the background and hills themselves represent young and old, mother and child.
